In Scotland, Wasps first opened artists' studio doors in 2002. This weekend artists designing art jewellery, goldsmithing and silversmithing will showcase their work.

Eighteen artists working in Wasps studios across Scotland in the disciplines of goldsmithing, silvermithing and jewellery will meet and greet their public directly at their studios. In its seventh year, the Wasps OpenStudios Weekend 2008, Saturday October 4, 2008 and Sunday October 5, 2008, offers the one-off chance of “exhibiting artists’ work …where they work”.

Scottish Artists, Art Jewellery, Works in Gold and Silver

The artists’ profiles reveal their orientation to making artistic works in gold and silver and art jewellery. Alison Macleod writes “Jewellery has traditionally been used to keep the memory of a loved one close to the heart. Through my use of traditional shapes such as the cameo I reference jewellery’s significance and its intrinsic connection to memories”.

Sandra Wilson, a lecturer at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Scotland can boast that her work is in the collection of HRH Princess Anne. Sandra is inspired by “microscopic images from science and the natural world” and works in 18ct gold and sterling silver.

Ruth Gordon and Genna Delaney share their Wasps studio. Ruth Gordon has exhibited her silversmithing in Japan and says that “My passion for colour and texture had led me to dye nylon monofilament and use brightly coloured enamels and plastics, which I heat form, and combine with silver. I also incorporate different silver chains, semi-precious stone beads, pearls and small amounts of gold in some of my pieces to give an extra edge of preciousness.” Architecture informs and movement inspires the work of Genna Delaney, a contemporary jewellery designer maker.

Cosmopolitan Bride and Embroidery are among the magazines that have featured the jewellery art of Suzanne Smith, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Suzanne Smith’s profile states “The tradition of taking afternoon tea is the main inspiration for her work, with the food consumed and the tableware used in this ritual providing a varied source of colour, pattern and texture. A collector by nature, she constantly gather and stores relics of the past”.

Further information about the artists’ profiles and the location of the studio where they work and are exhibiting jewellery this weekend in Scotland is available from Wasps.
